Embroidery is a great way to add a touch of class to an item such as a business shirt or polo shirt. Many people consider it looks better and more expensive than screen printing however the cost is not that high.
Embroidery works by digitising an image onto a special computer program. A disc is produced which is inserted into the disc drive of an embroidery machine. The embroidery machine which may have up to 8 needles then weaves the design onto a garment or other item such as a bag or cap.
The maximum size for embroidery in most cases is approx 250mm x 250mm.
Artwork for embroidery may be submitted in most formats, from ai, cdr, eps, pdf or even jpeg format.
Set up cost is $30 for a business card size logo. This is a once off cost.
Per unit cost is based upon the amount of stitches and dependant on the number of items embroidered at any one time.
Screen printing is where an image is made on a silk screen using a chemical emulsion process. Up to 6 colours can be used at once. The screen is pressed down onto the garment and ink is applied using a squeegee. The ink passes only through the part of the screen where the design has been etched into the emulsion. The garment or item being decorated is then heated which sets or dries the ink. If the design uses more than one colour the process is then repeated.
Another screen printing method is CMYK or 4 colour process printing. Using this method an almost photographic image can be created. (NB. this method is best used on white garments.)
